Easiest Bread Ever- Spelt Bread

I really truly admire all the beautiful bread that all you talented bloggers make.
But until I get as wonderful and patient as you guys, here is an easy+no mess+nutritious bread that is doable by everyone.
I've meaning to try it since ever, and finally did it a couple of weeks ago. The recipe is from allrecipes.com and it's so easy even a 3 year old can do it (unlike the no-knead bread where a 6 year old is needed)
Small effort- big results.
Perfect.

Spelt is an ancient grain that's a cousin of wheat. It's higher in protein and offers a broader spectrum of nutrients than wheat. People who are allergic to wheat supposedly tolerate this grain well. For more information about Spelt click here and here.

Following is the recipe as I made it, the
recipe on the site is 4 times the amount, but this is enough for a small loaf. And it only lasts a couple of days, so I wanted it to be small. It was a slight bit crumbly compared to store bought bread, but held up slicing pretty well. The nutty flavor of the Spelt went well with butter and strawberry preserves.

Very Simple Spelt Bread
Ingredients
  • 2 cups spelt flour
  • 2 tablespoons milled flax seeds (the original called for sesame seeds)
  • 2 pinches salt, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon molasses
  • 1/2 teaspoon teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 cup + 2 tablespoons reduced fat milk
Method
Preheat the oven to 350F (175C). Prepare a loaf pan by greasing it or line it with parchment.
In a bowl, mix all the dry ingredients. Add the milk and mix till everything is combined. Place the batter in to the prepared baking pan. Bake for 55 minutes. Supposedly if you cover it with another pan, it'll get a lovely crust; I did not try it..next time I will.

Thanks to Jean Roberts who submitted this recipe to allrecipes.com.

This bread goes to Sunshinemom for FIC Brown.

Is this your first bread? Wow. You did an amazing job, Bharti. I've never tried Spelt, don't even know if I can find it here, does it add a nutty flavour? By the way, my no-knead was a disaster so maybe a recipe for 3-year olds is what I need :)

What is spelt Bharti? Do we get it here in India? Looks like a great loaf & so 'well behaved'! The crumb looks ever so good too. Delish & healthy!

Wow! You're doing a lot of bread baking. I've never cooked with spelt, but this one looks good and interesting.

Arundathi: Thanks!
Rachel: Yup.
Dee: It's so easy, I don't even know if it qualifies as a first bread. It was just mix n bake. I won't take credit for anything, the recipe is just so simple.
Deeba: Spelt is a flour not unlike wheat. It's sold as a health food here because although it has gluten it's tolerated well by people who can't eat wheat due to allergies. From what I gathered on the internet, it isn't currently available in India :-(
Simran: I don't know about a lot but yeah this one was good and easy too.

I have read about spelt flour and its nutritive values so much but people here do not seem familiar with it - in fact I could not find it in any of the bigger stores too:(. The bread looks healthy and airy - right now there is one baking for breakfast, which reminds me - how good the house smells!! Thanks:) I won't be here for a while, as I have been advised rest, and am leaving today for Mom's place so if you do send in any entries and do not get a response from me please do not mind!

Lot of brown recipes from you! Love the bread, and that it is made from spelt flour. I had a disaster with spelt a few days back, and I swore never to try it again, but now I might just change my mind.
And this being your first bread, I think you did a great job.
